Overview

Instead of committing exclusively to one publisher, DBCS seeks to select the strongest curriculum in each academic area.

The A Beka curriculum provides a strong emphasis on phonics, computational skills, good study habits and encourages a disciplined approach to the pursuit of knowledge.

We have found the ACSI Science curriculum to be an excellent Christian approach to the implementation of the Scientific Method.

BJU Bible is a solid doctrinal base for the "real life" application provided by our teachers.

Early Learning Center (E4)

The philosophy of our E4 program is to introduce the children to their academic future by instilling in them the love of learning and the pre-reading skills they will need to succeed in a Christ centered atmosphere. Our students learn to read by using the phonics based ABeka curriculum and by the time they reach K5, most will have the skills to sound out words and read simple sentences. We believe in using a variety of teaching methods such as music, poetry, art, physical activity and literature to reach all individual learning styles. Our ABeka Numbers curriculum introduces numbers by recognition, value, and counting in numerical order. The ABeka phonics and math curriculums offer the necessary skills to succeed in kindergarten. DBCS emphasizes a strong Bible program using the ABeka Bible curriculum as well as weekly interactive Elementary chapel services. Along with a strong academic foundation, we emphasize social interaction skills, such as getting along with others, raising hands for recognition, following directions, listening, walking in a line, leadership skills, and job responsibilities. Above all, we teach the children to love the Lord, respect authority and enjoy the idea of coming to school.

Kindergarten (K5)

The K5 curriculum is based on the idea that the process, the content and the product all have a valuable contribution to the program. The child is at the center of the curriculum framework. We strive to have a clear sense of where the child is in terms of overall growth and development and to plan for developmentally appropriate learning activities.

Our goal is to cultivate fluent readers through a phonetic based program as well as critical thinkers and problem solvers through a loving and nurturing classroom environment. Students will learn effective organization and communication skills through daily interaction. Curriculum covers the life sciences and early discovery and exploration and colonization of America. We also enjoy outside resources including: computers, art, library, music and physical education.

2nd Grade

Bible time is the most important time of the second grade school day.  The Word of God is presented through the telling of Old and New Testaments stories.  Second grade students also develop accuracy, expression and comprehension though the utilization of the phonetic approach to reading.  Beginning language concepts are introduced and practiced daily during seatwork time.  Beginning cursive writing is taught and reviewed. Second grade math is a building-block subject and lays the foundation for students to understand concepts later in their schooling.  Resource classes in art, keyboarding, physical education, applied music and music theory provide age appropriate instruction.

4th Grade

In 4th Grade, we study the attributes of God in our Bible curriculum. We study the history of Virginia from founding to present day. We study the government structure and how it works. We learn the states and their locations. In Math, we focus on fractions. We learn how to add, subtract, reduce, change improper fractions, make equivalents, and multiply fractions. In Science, we study systems. In Life science, we study the design, order, diversity, and system of life. We study Energy and its forms. We study the balance in Earth and Space. In Health, we study the body systems. In Language, we study the parts of speech and how to correctly write and communicate with sentences. We learn to write reports using resources. In Spelling, we use a varied word study with phonetically-consistant patterned words and high frequency words. This enables us to expand our vocabulary and to write with fluency. In Reading, we teach biblical principles and skills needed for lifelong learning. We develop critical thinking skills and improve comprehension through the curriculum. We read novels in addition to the curriculum to enhance the student's knowledge of history.
